By targeting diseases at the genetic and cellular level, Cell and Gene Therapies (CGTs) offer an unprecedented opportunity to provide ground-breaking treatments that could prevent, halt or even reverse individual conditions.

Committed to become a leader in this field Bayer established a CGT platform that is developing a pioneering and extensive portfolio of CGT technologies to provide options to patients who previously had none.

By translating the promise of CGTs into tangible treatments, we aim for achieving long-term relief for patients and making a difference for those who simply have no time to wait.

Cell Therapy

Cell therapy involves administering living cells to patients to replace those lost or damaged by disease, aiming to halt or even reverse disease progression. These cells can be derived from the patient or a healthy donor and are often engineered to combat specific illnesses. Bayer entered the field of cell therapy by acquiring BlueRock Therapeutics in 2019.

Gene Therapy

Gene therapies that deliver genetic material directly into a patient’s cells to address the root causes of disease. This innovative process can involve introducing a functional copy of a gene, deactivating a malfunctioning gene, or replacing a defective gene with a healthy one. In 2020, Bayer strengthened its commitment to this transformative field by acquiring AskBio Inc., a leader in gene therapy with over 750 patents and expertise in adeno-associated viruses (AAV).
